Podiatric sports medicine encompasses all patients who become
injured through sport. Sports medicine is not just for the
professional or highly competitive athlete. Children and youth
are frequently injured in all types of sports as they are
not fully developed and are often not fully trained with regard
to preventative measures such as proper stretching before
and after activity. The "weekend warrior" type patient
is often injured as he/or she engages in sports activity which
is too strenuous for their low level of conditioning.
Dr. Parker has provided treatment for professionals in the
NBA and US Olympic teams. Dr. Parker also provides care for
the Rockettes. The majority of his sports patients are youth
involved in soccer, baseball, football, dancing and gymnastics.
Each of these sports has its own unique demands on the foot
and ankle resulting in a variety of injuries and over-use
syndromes.
Commonly seen conditions include:
Sprains and Fractures of the Foot & Ankle
Plantar Fasciitis
Tendon Injuries (Achilles most common)
Shin Splints
Capsulitis
Bursitis
Turf-Toe
Dislocations
Nerve Injuries
Nail Injuries
Friction Blisters
Heel Pain
Prevention and education is a key component of sports medicine
and rehabilitation. Our goal is to safely return the athlete
to his or her sport safely and as soon as possible.
